Must-Have Basics For Coachella 2016

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Consider Coachella the fashion week of the West, with the emergence of some of the hottest styles you’ll be wearing all summer. Meanwhile, prepare for all that gawking with these must-have basics that will stand the test of time.

Story by Jen Betts

While Coachella used to be all about boho style — with fringe, flower crowns, and flash tattoos essentials for the biggest festival of the season — much is changing. New York Fashion Week may be the dominant showcase for designers in the U.S., but some say that the fashion on parade at Coachella is becoming more influential, making it the better fashion week for the West Coast. This is evidenced by the thousands of brands that flock to the music festival to launch summer trends with the chic and most-watched. In fact, the biggest kick-off parties, like the Harper’s Bazaar Luncheon or the Revolve Party, serves as a veritable runway of social media who’s who, showing off what they consider to be cool.

After all, other than the music, Coachella is all about wandering the grounds, looking for your favorite celeb donned in some sort of paparazzi-bait get-up. Is it the hat, sunglasses, sandals, and denim cut-offs that make the outfit, or is it really the attitude that makes people watching for a week in the desert so appealing? All we know is Coachella is addicting, and so are the trends that emerge out of this festival flock fest.

So if you’re attending Coachella this year, get your look-at-me outfit ready, as well as these must-have basics that’ll stand the test of time. It’s everything you’ll want to grab before your friends grab you for that two-hour car ride from L.A. to the desert.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Skin First, Sun Second

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3852″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Let’s face it: We are not getting any younger. There is minimal shade on that field, and we are all fighting for it. So come to Coachella prepared, and keep your skin hydrated and protected. A useful tip from celebrity makeup artist Spencer Barnes is to take your SPF and mix it with your foundation. This will ensure protection and coverage all day, as long as you reapply every few hours. Try VI Derm SPF 50+ Sunscreen; with its water resistant coverage, you won’t have to worry about sweating away your sun protection. VI DERM SPF 50+ Sunscreen, $30, dermstore.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

A Pop of Color

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3853″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Coachella brings out a bit of the wild side in everyone. Some don those terrible neon orange plastic glasses, or a turquoise and gold jewelry ensemble that the next girl bought from H&M. We prefer Joico’s new InstaTint, a temporary hair color spray that showcases your trendy side without the commitment. Spray on that pop of color, and wash it away the minute you shower. Genius! Joico InstaTint, $9.99, joico.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Sandals or Comfort?

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3854″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Bohemian sandals are a Coachella must for most. Sure, you could wear the Stuart Weitzman Grecian sandals that every Kardashian has, or the latest sandal from Forever 21 that comes in tan, black, or white. Either way, they don’t look comfortable enough for 12 hours on grass and dirt. Why not stand out from the crowd and go for Converse Chuck Taylors? These classic sneakers are stylish, chic, and playful, and go with any outfit, from a maxi dress to skinny jeans and denim cut-offs. And the best part about wearing Chuck Taylors on and off dusty fields? You save your pedicure. The Chuck Taylor, $60, converse.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Barely-There Makeup

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3903″ img_size=”500×500″ onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]There is so much dust flying around in the desert, sometimes it’s hard to cake on the bake, right? I mean, contouring is important, and so is the Kylie Lip Kit, but truthfully, you could party hop and hit the fields with subtle makeup and still look fabulous at Coachella. So keep it minimal, and just add a bright lip color. We recommend AJ Crimson’s Lipstick in Chasing Saturday; the color is vibrant with a silky matte finish to complete your festival look. AJ Crimson S+M Sultry and Matte Lipstick in Chasing Saturday, $18.50, ajcrimson.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

That Dress

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3857″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]During festival season, you have to get that dress — that dress that makes you feel youthful, playful, and romantic, all at the same time. You’ll often see festivalgoers in florals, cutouts, mesh, and fringe everything, but either way, they’re rocking dresses that makes them feel fabulous. So grab one and go! The dresses from Amuse Society are beachy and beautiful — there are so many styles that are perfect for Coachella, you can’t really go wrong. Amuse Society Sakura Dress, $50-75, amusesociety.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Jean Shorts

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3858″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]I mean, staple. With all the parties giving away free T-shirts, you really don’t have to bring anything else but your jean shorts. And what style of shorts you wear is up to you. From their own DIY styles to designer brands, festivalgoers practically live in denim cut-offs the entire time. So where to pick up almost any style of jean short? Look no further than Topshop — think of this as your Coachella jean short destination. Topshop Moto Shorts, $52, topshop.com[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

A Charger

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3859″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]Between Snapchatting the latest party and Instagramming your favorite DJ, you’re going to be needing some extra juice for your iPhone. How else will you document all those sunsets and take selfies on every Ferris wheel in sight? For some serious backup, there is no better mobile charging device than Mophie’s Juice Pack Reserve. Their most compact battery case keeps your iPhone charged an extra four hours, ensuring music junkies stay happy for days. Mophie Juice Pack Reserve, $59.95, mophie.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

The Lifesaver

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”3860″ img_size=”medium” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text]The desert can range from scorching to freezing, but it’s another story when those winds pick up. You’re certainly not going to be carrying around a coat, and who wants to wear an oversized sweatshirt emblazoned with tacky logos. So before you leave for that desert sun, grab a lightweight hoodie with a classic vibe. The American Made Supply Company offers the slim fit Terry Full Zip Hoodie, which is perfect over any outfit or for wrapping around your waist. American Made Supply Co Full Zip Hoodie, $60, americanmadesupplyco.com.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
