CHANEL Returns to Biarritz and Matthieu Blazy Rewrites the Myth of Cruise

At Biarritz, Matthieu Blazy delivered the kind of Cruise collection that understands fashion’s most seductive trick: dressing women to construct an entire fantasy of departure around them. Returning CHANEL to the Basque shoreline where Gabrielle Chanel first opened her couture house in 1915, Blazy treated the location as conceptual infrastructure, allowing the Atlantic wind, the casino mirrors, and the languid rituals of seaside society to seep directly into the clothes.

The opening black dress, severe yet fluid, immediately set the tone for a woman suspended between salon polish and barefoot insouciance. Tweeds arrived loosened, salt-washed, and almost wind-frayed; marinière references, swimmer’s caps, pearl-encrusted mesh, and mermaid glints never tipped into costume because Blazy grounded each flourish with that particularly French understanding of nonchalance, the sense that even the most embellished CHANEL woman must appear as though she dressed without looking in the mirror.

Every look nodded to the House’s foundational codes, black and ivory, nautical ease, the little black dress in endless mutation, but Blazy resisted reverence. Instead, he pushed CHANEL toward a more vibrant instability: half-shoes held by ribbons, skirts moving like wet silk against the leg, oversized bijoux flashing like found treasures after a tide. It was heritage seen through sea mist, slightly blurred, slightly stranger, and therefore far more modern.

There is already a divided conversation around Blazy’s CHANEL, which is perhaps the clearest sign that it has entered the realm of relevance; fashion audiences are no longer simply consuming the collections, they are arguing over them. Some praise the renewed youth and looseness, while others resist the disruption of familiar bourgeois polish. However, Cruise in Biarritz made one thing undeniable: this is no transitional stewardship. It is an attempt to rewrite the emotional vocabulary of CHANEL, from polished certainty to windswept desire.
