Your academic background is in biochemistry, and you’ve conducted oncology research at ASU’s Biodesign Institute. What inspired you to pivot from a career in science to acting, and how have these distinct disciplines influenced each other in your life?

I’ve always wanted to be an actor—my earliest memories involve reciting movie lines, performing dramatic retellings of fairytales for my grandmother, and putting on Britney Spears impersonations for guests, using a landline headset as a microphone. Growing up in a Singaporean family with no connections to the entertainment industry, my parents didn’t know how to help me pursue those dreams. So, when it came time to choose a college major, I focused on my other strong interest—science.

Even as I immersed myself in science, my love for fashion and entertainment never faded. Thanks to social media, I started channeling my creative side, leading to collaborations with local photographers and brands. This opened doors to my first modeling agency in Arizona, sparking the realization that acting could be a real career for me. Eventually, I had to make a choice: science or acting. I chose acting, knowing I’d regret it if I didn’t give it my all.

Though I no longer use my biochemistry degree, I have no regrets. Research, at its core, is a highly creative process, and that, coupled with the self-discipline required in science, has strengthened my work ethic. I apply the same creative, thorough, multifaceted approach when preparing for auditions and roles.

Before moving to the U.S., you participated in Singapore’s Campus Superstar singing competition, reaching the live shows. How did this early experience shape your passion for entertainment?

Campus Superstar was a major learning experience for me. I had no prior training and was competing against seasoned performers. The competition environment was cutthroat, and I realized I had crippling stage fright. But despite the challenges, I learned that the only thing I could control was my preparation. The night I was eliminated, the host told me, “Opportunities will only present themselves to those who are prepared. I know, we will see you again on the world stage when you are more prepared.” That moment stuck with me, and I’ve carried that lesson ever since.

While attending graduate school, you were scouted by a modeling agency, leading you to relocate to Los Angeles in 2019. Can you share the story behind this discovery and how modeling served as a bridge to your acting career?

Social media played a huge role. Posting fashion content caught the attention of photographers in Arizona, leading to my involvement with Phoenix Fashion Week (PHXFW). Through PHXFW, I met a stylist, Angela Keller, and after modeling for her on a morning news fashion segment, my future agent, Terri Camberlango, signed me.

Modeling gave me the financial means to move to L.A. and pursue acting seriously. It also helped me develop confidence in front of the camera and learn the art of networking—essential skills for an actor. Shortly after moving to L.A., a collaboration with photographer Siobhan Webb led to my first representation in TV and film, marking the start of my acting career.

Your debut television role as ‘Nicole’ on Hulu’s American Horror Stories marked a significant milestone. What challenges and opportunities did this role present?

Landing a multi-episode guest role in a Ryan Murphy universe was surreal. Just days before booking it, my manager had suggested I start doing background work to gain union eligibility—but instead, this role fast-tracked me. Working alongside actors I admired my whole life felt unreal, but imposter syndrome crept in. I often second-guessed myself, wondering if I truly deserved this opportunity. Despite the challenges, it was an invaluable learning experience and a defining moment in my career.

How has your multicultural upbringing influenced your approach to acting and character development?

Growing up in Singapore, a fast-paced and highly competitive society, instilled discipline and resilience in me. Experiencing life in both Singapore and the U.S. gave me a deeper understanding of cultural nuances, which helps me approach characters with empathy and authenticity. Living as both a majority and a minority in different societies has shaped my worldview and influences how I tell stories on screen.

You recently played a powerful role on SWAT, speaking both English and Mandarin. How did you prepare for such an intense character?

Playing CC, a pregnant immigrant farm worker escaping abuse, was emotionally challenging. I researched the real-life struggles of immigrant laborers and spent time internalizing CC’s fears and resilience. On set, seeing so many Asian actresses portraying farm workers brought the story to life for me, making it easier to connect deeply with my character’s pain and determination.

With experience in singing, modeling, and acting, how do you balance these artistic pursuits?

Each discipline enhances the others. Singing and dancing have made me more competitive for performance-heavy roles, while modeling has refined my body awareness and stage presence. These skills complement each other and keep me creatively fulfilled.

You’re set to appear in Killing the Competition as Hannah. What can audiences expect from this project?

It was an absolute dream working alongside Melissa Joan Hart, whom I grew up watching in Sabrina the Teenage Witch! Without giving away spoilers, my character, Hannah, the star dancer on the cheer team, plays a pivotal role in the unraveling of Melissa’s character’s story. Fans can expect suspense, intrigue, and some unexpected twists!
