We don’t get to feature child actors as often on Composure, so it is definitely special when we do! At eleven years old, Chloe Coleman has already played unforgettable roles on several series from her first set, Glee, to HBO’s Big Little Lies. Her acting prowess has gained her a rapidly growing filmography over the last six years as audiences fall in love with her both on and off the screen. With two highly well-received films out this year, My Spy and Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, she’s become entirely unstoppable with several new projects in production. We get a chance to ask Coleman about the future roles she’s been cast in, how she’s managed to balance her flourishing career with school as well as her favorite moments from My Spy and Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made.
We’re amazed at your young talent on the screen! With your first casting at five, has it felt like a whirlwind for you?
Thank you so much. From when I booked my first job to now, it has been a complete whirlwind going from project to project. In 2020, I could have four movies coming out and two TV series. It’s been the craziest year ever, especially with the pandemic turning everything upside down. But I have been so grateful for everything. Meeting other artists and making friends is what I enjoy most about my job. Also, just doing the scenes themselves, because I really love storytelling, and have so many book ideas in my head right now. Now’s a good time to write.
Critics and fans praised your latest movies My Spy and Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made. Can you share with us your favorite moments from working on those films?
With My Spy and Timmy Failure, like all movies I work on, it’s the cast and crew that make it a blast for me. I love how everyone brings their true self and unique talents together, and we get to be a family while making a movie. Getting to know the cast helps me feel close to them and like I have a connection that really gets me in the moment. I had great relationships and friendships from both My Spy and Timmy Failure that I will have for life.
You also currently have projects in post-production, can you give us a sneak peek into the roles you’ll be playing?
Gunpowder Milkshake is going to be so exciting! With a powerful female–driven cast (Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, Michelle Yeoh), the story focuses on three generations of assassins. My character Emily is the third generation, and she represents an end to the cycle of violence. It’s super–stylized action and was a dream come true to work with our director, Navot Papushado. He’s incredible and sooooo creative!
Marry Me may also be coming out later this year, and I felt so lucky to work with Ms. Jennifer Lopez because I admire her so much. I love my character Lou Gilbert. She’s a pre-teen that is not so thrilled with herself. School is tough, and she has a strained relationship with her single dad. Owen Wilson plays my dad, and Sarah Silverman is our family friend. They are both hysterical and great fun to work with.
Has it been hard for you to balance being in school and having a busy acting schedule?
I am now just starting middle school, and my schoolwork has never taken a back seat to acting. Set school is quite similar to online school, and it’s just never been a problem because I absolutely love school and everything about it.
Looking into the future, who are some actors you’d love to share the screen with?
I would love to work with McKenna Grace and Lexi Underwood—they are both teen actors I really admire. Also, I’d love to work with Daveed Diggs, Jason Mamoa, Kate McKinnon, Tom Hanks, Will Ferrell, Kevin Hart. Now, if Billie Eilish started acting, I think I would just fall over! There are so many roles I see her playing. She is so grounded and natural.
